7 tips for making any room seem bigger

Published on January 17, 2018

Decorating a small apartment comes with its own set of challenges. We’ve rounded up seven no-fail design tricks to make any room feel more spacious, for when you don’t happen to have a penthouse at your disposal.

1. Stick to one or two colors:

While dashes of color can instantly refresh a space, sticking to only one or two colors (or similar shades of the same hue) and spreading them evenly throughout the space will make any room seem bigger. Choose a monochromatic color scheme to make sure that the elements blend together.

2. Cut the clutter:

Nothing makes a small space look smaller than crowding it with too much stuff. Put unnecessary items out of sight. Create a focal point in your room. Instead of a gallery wall, choose art that’s big and bold. Take out large rugs to create the illusion of more floor space.

3. Keep it smooth:

Keeping surfaces smooth will cut the feeling of clutter and visually expand the space. From lights that hang down and floating shelves that stick out from the wall, try and keep walls, tabletops, and counters free of clutter. Only showcase signature pieces.

4. You don’t have to use up every nook and corner:

Leaving a few inches in between the wall and your furniture will make space look more open.

5. Use stripes to stretch space:

A striped rug will create visual movement and make your room appear longer. Make sure that the rug is oriented towards the direction that’s the longest for optimal effect.

6. Hang curtains floor to ceiling:

This creates an elongated line that makes windows and thereby rooms appear taller.

7. Open up space with lighting:

Allow natural light to flow freely inside your space. Use sheer coverings for the windows to allow light to pass through. Or leave windows uncovered to give a room more depth. Try using a clear shower curtain if your bathroom’s tiny.

Love your tiny apartment by opening it up. Exploit your square footage with these creative ideas.
